Hakkımızda

We are the Slow Food Mahal based in Izmir, Türkiye, dedicated to fostering strong connections between food production, indigenous knowledge, and biodiversity. As part of the Slow Food International network, we actively contribute to Slow Food Farms and Slow Food Presidium projects, working to protect local food traditions, preserve biodiversity, and promote agroecological, nature-based practices in agriculture. Our mission is to create a more resilient, equitable food system that celebrates the richness of our natural environment.

Location:
The Slow Food Mahal Convivium operates within the mountain range between the Bay of Izmir and the coast of Kesre (Özdere), along the Aegean Sea. The Kızıldağ Mountain and Kaplanyatağı Hills stretch across this region, with Mahal Hill—one of the highest peaks in the range—giving the convivium its name. This area spans six Izmir districts: Balçova, Menderes, Seferihisar, Güzelbahçe, Karabağlar, and Gaziemir. The Kızıldağ and Kaplanyatağı ranges act as a natural divide between the coast and the interior of the province, also serving as the primary source of drinking water for the region. The area is home to Izmir’s oldest traditional olive groves and vineyards, as well as vast pastures where traditional goat farming continues to thrive. The unique olive-tree pastures here are dominated by the Erkence Olive variety, which is found only on the Izmir Peninsula. These olive pastures not only provide farmland but also serve as crucial habitats for a rich diversity of animal and plant species.

Goals:
Our Convivium is committed to exploring and preserving the connections between food, indigenous knowledge, and biodiversity.
